Schley track and field teams win region, Furlow athletes achieve high marks

ALBANY – Both the Schley County boys and girls track and field teams were able to capture the GHSA 1A Division 2 Region 6 championship on Monday at Hugh Mills Stadium in Albany.

“I am very proud of our student-athletes, as the boys and girls were both able to win the region championship,” SCHS Head Coach Scott Burgess said. “

For the girls, this is the fourth year in a row that they have won the region championship and the Wildcats and Lady Wildcats have both been able to win five out of the last seven region championships.

“I would like to thank the following coaches: Coach Beth Kinney for working with the distance runners, Coach Clifton Aldridge for working with the throwers and Coach Ashley Dwaram for working with the pole vaulters,” Burgess said. “While much of track is an individual sport, it is also a team sport as far as points go and many athletes stepped up and competed in the maximum number of events (4) to help the team win,” Burgess continued.

The Lady Wildcats finished in first place with a total of 164.50 points. Macon County came in second place with 108 points and Furlow Charter finished in third place with 79 points.

On the boys’ side, the Wildcats finished in first place with 149 points and were far ahead of Manchester, who finished in second place with 94 points. Furlow Charter finished in sixth place with a total of 67 points.

In girls’ action, the Lady Wildcats got top 10 finishes in the Girls 800 Meter Run from Mallory Crenshaw, Emily Wilder and Britton Cox. Crenshaw finished in fifth place with a time of 3:12.45. Wilder finished right behind Crenshaw in sixth place with a time of 3:12.73 and Cox finished right behind Wilder in seventh place with a time of 3:21.39. Furlow Charter’s Maria Kilheffer won the event, finishing in a time of 2:50.94 and her two teammates, Ashley Narvaez and Isabel Amato, finished in third and fourth place respectively. Narvaez crossed the finish line in a time of 3:10.05 and Amato finished with a time of 3:11.25.

In the Girls 1600 Meter Run, Schley County’s Emmalyn Snyder finished in fourth place with a time of 7:05.38. Her teammates, Kaleigh Johnson and Mallory Crenshaw, finished in fifth and sixth place respectively. Johnson finished with a time of 7:52.31 and Crenshaw crossed the finish line in a time of 8:01.24. The Furlow Charter Lady Falcons ended up sweeping the top three spots in the event. Maria Kilheffer won the event and finished in a time of 6:32.78. Her teammate, Elizabeth Arizmendi, finished in second with a time of 6:38.18. Karen Perez took third place with a time of 6:51.60.

In the Girls 3200 Meter Run, Schley County and Furlow Charter took all of the six spots. Elizabeth Arizmendi won the event for the Lady Falcons, finishing with a time of 14:39.56. her teammate, Maria Kilheffer, finished in second place with a time of 14:47.50 and Karen Perez finished in third place in a time of 15:23.20. The three Schley County athletes rounded out the last three spots. Kaleigh Johnson finished in fourth place with a time of 16:18.82. Her two teammates, Emmalyn Snyder and Britton Cox finished in fifth and sixth respectively. Snyder finished in a time of 16:20.70 and Cox crossed the finish line in a time of 17:20.43.

In the Girls 100 Meter Hurdles, Schley County’s Daneria Thornton took the top spot, winning the event in a time of 16.97. Her teammate, Payton Goodin, finished in fourth place in a time of 19.55. Jamesen Hollomon finished in 12th place with a time of 25.02.

In the Girls 300 Meter Hurdles, Schley County’s Jamesen Hollomon finished in sixth place with a time of 56.01 and her teammate, Payton Goodin, finished in eighth place in a time of 58.31.

In the Girls 4×100 Meter Relay event, the Schley County team of layla Williams, Carlee Zanders, Lillyan Register, Emma Campbell, TaNiya Holt, Madison Hughes, Kate Saint and McKenzee Solomon finished in fourth place with a time of 1:04.45.

In the Girls 4×200 Meter Relay event, the Schley County team of Emma Campbell, Lillyan Register, Madison Hughes, Kate Saint, McKenzee Solomon, Layla Williams, Carlee Zanders and Savannah Ewing finished in sixth place in a time of 2:16.94.

Furlow Charter’s Haydn Wright was the region champion in the Boys 800 Meter event and set a new school record of 2:13.11.

Many of these same athletes competed for the Lady Wildcats in the Girls 4×400 Meter Relay event. The team of Emma Campbell, Madison Hughes, Lillyan Register, Abby Kirkland, Britton Cox, Layla Williams, Savannah Ewing and Emily Wilder finished in fourth place in a time of 6:09.41.

Many of these same Schley County athletes competed in the Girls 4×800 Meter Relay event. The team of Britton Cox, Emmalyn Snyder, Kaleigh Johnson, Abby Kirkland, Mallory Crenshaw, Emily Wilder, Madison Hughes and Payton Goodin finished in second place in a time of 13:44.43. The Furlow Charter team of Isabel Amato, Karen Perez, Elizabeth Arizmendi, Maria Kilheffer and Ashley Narvaez won the event, finishing in a time of 13:25.13.

In the Girls High Jump event, Jamesen Hollomon finished in third place with a jump of 4-06.00. Her Schley County teammates, Payton Goodin and Emma Campbell, finished in fifth and sixth place respectively with jumps of 4-04.00 and 4-02.00.

The Girls’ Pole Vault event was swept by the Lady Wildcats. Emily Wilder won the vent as she vaulted a height of 7-06.00 and her two teammates, Kate Saint and Emma Campbell, ended up tying for second place, as they both vaulted a height of 6-00.00.

In the Girls’ Long Jump event, Daneria thornton took second place with a jump of 15-02.50. Her SCHS teammate, Jamesen Solomon, finished in 11th place with a jump of 10-01.50.

In the Girls’ Triple Jump event, the Lady Wildcats took second, third and fourth place. Daneria Thornton took second place with a jump of 31-01.50. Jamesen Solomon took third place with a jump of 27-03.25 and McKenzee Solomon took fourth place with a jump of 25-00.00.

In the Girls’ Shot Put event, Schley County’s TaNiya Holt took second place with a distance throw of 29-07.00. Her teammate, Layla Williams, finished in fifth place with a distance throw of 26-02.50.

TaNiya Holt won the Girls’ Discus event for the Lady Wildcats, as she made a distance throw of 85-10. Her teammate, Layla Williams, finished in third place with a distance throw of 83-11.

In boys’ action, Schley County’s Kendall Sims took fourth place in both the 100 Meter Dash and the 200 Meter Dash

In the Boys’ 800 Meter Run, Tray Thomas took fifth place for the Wildcats, as he finished in a time of 2:22.78. Haydn Wright of Furlow Charter won the event and finished in a time of 2:13.11.

In the Boys’ 1600 Meter event, it was dominated by the Falcons, as Ibis Gonzalez won the event and set a new school record with a time of 4:54.13. His brother Dennis finished right behind him in second place in a time of 4:58.18. Ian Biedermann finished in fourth place with a time of 5:03.80.

The Furlow Falcons also dominated the Boys 3200 Meter event. Dennis Gonzalez won the event in a time of 11:06.00. His FC teammates, Ibis Gonzalez and Ian Biedermann, finished in second and third place respectively.

In the Boys’ 110 Meter Hurdles, Schley County’s Tyrese Cook finished in second place in a time of 16.62. Cook also finished in third place in the Boys’ 300 Meter Hurdles, as he finished in a time of 44.16.

In the Boys’ 4×100 Meter Relay event, the Schley County team of Jayden Figueroa, Jeremiah Johnson, Anthony Hill, Lance Jordan, Kendall Sims, Carson Westbrook, Sam Forehand and Jayden Monford finished in fifth place in a time of 49.27. May of the same Schley County athletes competed in the 4×200 Meter Relay and the SCHS team finished in sixth place in a time of 1:41.36.

SCHS won the 4×400 Meter Relay event, finishing in a time of 3:59.31. The team consisted of Tyrese Cook, Jalon Solomon, Declan Ekkel, Jayden Monford, Lance Jordan, Tray Thomas, Anthony Hill and Kyler Walton.

Furlow Charter won the 4×800 Meter Relay event, finishing in a time of 9:49.92. The team consisted of Ibis Gonzalez, Dennis Gonzalez, Haydn Wright, Ian Biedermann, Cole Bartholome and Wiley Stewart. Schley County took second in the event and finished in a time of 10:26.17. The team consisted of Tray Thomas, Markus Sowell, Ethan Bliss, Jalon Solomon, Declan Ekkel, Sterling Blanchard, Jayden Monford and Kyler Walton.

In addition to his successes in other running events, Tyrese Cook finished in fourth place in the High Jump event, as he jumped a height of 5-10.00. The Pole Vault event was swept by the Wildcats, as Declan Ekkel won the event, vaulting a height of 10-06.00. His teammates, Braylon Baldwin and Sterling Blanchard, finished in second and third respectively, clearing a height of 9-06.00.

In the Triple Jump event, Schley County’s Terrion Solomon finished in third place with a distance jump of 40-07.50 and the Wildcats took first and second in the Shot Put. Zayden Walker won the event with a distance throw of 49-10.00 and Wyatt Halstead finished right behind him in second with a distance throw of 43-01.00.

Both Halstead and Walker took the top two spots in the Discus throw as well. Halstead won the event with a distance throw of 142-07 and Walker finished in second with a distance throw of 121-06.

The top eight finishers in each event earn points for their team and the top four in each event will qualify for the sectional meet on Saturday, May 4 in Albany.
