ELLAVILLE – The Schley County Wildcats showed why they are one of the top teams in the state in Class A Division 2, as they swept the Towns County Indians 11-1 and 8-4 at Wildcat Park to move on to the third round of the GHSA Class A Division 2 state baseball playoffs.

In the first game of the best of three-game series, the Wildcats scored 11 runs on 13 hits. Oscar Lloyd led the Wildcats’ attack by going 3 for 3 at the plate with an RBI and three runs scored and Brody Smith went 2 for 3 with a solo home run in the bottom of the fourth. Ashton Raybon went 2 for 4 with an RBI and a run scored and Jake Little went 2 for 2 at the plate with two runs scored. One other Wildcat that did his job with the bat, Rylan Conner, had a double with three RBIs.

Brody Smith had another dominating performance on the mound for the Wildcats. In five innings of work, Smith gave up a run on three hits, walked three and struck out three. Trenton Stubbs came on in relief of Smith. In one scoreless inning of work, he gave up a hit and struck out two.

The Wildcats were now one win away from advancing to the third round, and in Game 2 of the series, they were able to do just that with an 8-4 victory over TC.

The Indians scored two runs in the bottom of the first to take a 2-0 lead, but the Wildcats responded with four runs on three hits and took advantage of two walks. Then in the top of the third, SCHS added another run on an RBI double by Brody Smith, making the score 5-2.

Then in the top of the fifth inning, the Wildcats added three more runs by taking advantage of two walks, a single by Jack Clark and they were able to capitalize on an error.

The Indians scored two runs in the bottom of the fifth, but that would be all they could produce, as pitchers Jake Little and Rylan Conner held them scoreless in the sixth and seventh innings to give the Wildcats the series sweep.

Smith had a brilliant game offensively for Schley County, as he tallied half of the Wildcats’ six hits. He went 3 for 4 with two doubles, three RBIs and two runs scored.

Ashton Raybon got the start on the bump for the Wildcats. In a little over three innings of work, he gave up two runs on three hits, walked two and struck out five.

Trenton Stubbs came on in relief of Raybon and had a very brief appearance. Then Jake Little came in and pitched two innings. Giving up two runs on a hit with two walks and four strikeouts.

Rylan Conner came on in the seventh and closed it out with two strikeouts, including the final out of the game.

After Game 2 was completed, SCHS Athletic Director Gabe Theiss presented SCHS head coach Chuck Cheek and assistant coach William Rooks with a picture of a ring that will be given to Coach Cheek for having won the 500th game of his career.

The Wildcats will play in the third round of the playoffs on Saturday and will host Lanier County on Saturday.
