A former Sumter County Sheriff’s Office Detention Officer, Yakeema Shantrell Mercer, was arrested on Monday, May 20th, 2024 for her role in an attempt to smuggle illegal drugs into the jail. After a complete and thorough investigation by our Investigative Division, Mercer and two other individuals were identified and charged with Possession With Intent To Distribute a Controlled Substance, Items Prohibited By Inmates, and Identity Fraud. Mercer turned herself in and was released on bond. At the time of this incident one of Mercer’s accomplices, Camry Kemarurius May, was being held at the Sumter County jail on murder charges. After these new charges, May was transferred to another facility. The third accomplice, Quintavious Lamontae Williams (currently on probation), is still at large but we anticipate he will be in custody soon. Sheriff Eric D. Bryant would like to remind the citizens of Sumter County and the employees of the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office that their safety and well-being are of the utmost importance and that this type of behavior will not be tolerated.
