The Board of Elections met June 4 at 4:30 PM at the Board of Commissioners meeting room. Board members Randy Howard and chair Dr. Shirley Latimore were in attendance, with board member Carson Walker attending virtually.

During chair highlights, Latimore talked about bringing the request to use the former armory at 903 Adderton St. as a Board of Elections headquarters to the Board of Commissioners. “It’s a building that we would like to be housed in as well as have our advanced voting.”

Election supervisor Sandra Patterson gave the 2024 elections update. “The audit was on May 30, and all the numbers [were] correct. Advance voting, we start June 10th through 14th, 9-5 out at the fairgrounds.”

The advanced voting precedes the June 18th Republican primary runoff for United States House of Representatives, District 2, between Chuck Hand and A. Wayne Johnson.

After the meeting, Latimore talked about the benefits of the armory building. She mentioned that there’s enough room to store all the equipment without having two or three locations, as well as space for training.

She talked about a need to educate voters about what district they are in, and how to find a sample ballot, and how the location could serve as a venue for voter education, housing maps. Latimore also talked about the changing role of technology in the need to educate voters on how to access information.
