AMERICUS — Carl Pierce, 82, of Pelham passed away on Thursday, Oct. 22, 2015, at Phoebe Sumter Medical Center in Americus. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Oct. 26, 2015, at Harvey Funeral Chapel in Dawson, with interment to follow in Dover Baptist Church Cemetery. A visitation will be held at the funeral home one hour prior to the service.
Carl was born on Dec. 4, 1932, in Tangipahoa, La., to Otis Pierce and Eardy Simmons Pierce. He served in forward infantry units in the U.S. Army during conflicts in Korea and Vietnam. His military career took his family across the United States to Texas, Kansas, California, and Georgia as well as to Guam and Germany.  Late in his career, he served as head of the ROTC at the University of Houston. Even though military was his career, he really enjoyed being a cattle farmer.
In addition to his parents, Carl was preceded in death by three brothers and three sisters. Survivors include his wife, Carolyn Stokes Pierce of Pelham; sons, Dr. Frank C. Pierce of Plains and James C. Pierce of Madison, Miss.; grandchildren, Tucker Carlton Pierce, Zachary Charles Pierce, and Sydney Carlyn Pierce; and a number of nieces and nephews.
The family would like to express special thanks to Dr. Posey in Moultrie and to the nurses, doctors, and staff of Sylvia Barr Medical Center in Adel, Mattie Marshall Memory Care Center in Americus, Magnolia Manor Unit 5 Rehab Center in Americus, Dr. Olik and staff of Phoebe Sumter Medical Center in Americus, and Phoebe Sumter Hospice for the great care given to Carl during his illness.
