AMERICUS – Georgia Southwestern State University (GSW) head baseball coach, Bryan McLain, recently announced the hiring of Dustin Coffman as an assistant coach for the 2017-18 season.
Coffman will work with the Georgia Southwestern outfielders and hitters this season.
“This is a dream come true,” Coffman said. “I’m getting paid to coach baseball and recruit in the south within one of the best baseball conferences in the country. I want to thank Bryan McLain and Mike Leeder for this unbelievable opportunity. I am very excited to be a part of an up and coming program and look forward to building something special here at GSW.”
Coffman joins the Hurricanes staff after spending the summer as head coach for the Edenton Steamers, a college summer team and member of the Coastal Plain League. Prior to working with the Steamers, Coffman spent four years as a volunteer assistant with the University of Cincinnati baseball team. He has also coached on the staffs at junior-college powerhouse Wabash Valley College and the Bourne Braves of the Cape Cod League.
“I’m excited to have Dustin join our staff,” McLain said. “He already has a substantial coaching background at several different levels and he’ll be able to use that expertise in helping our guys grow as players and young men.”
Coffman began his coaching career at Indiana University where he got his start as a volunteer strength-and-conditioning coach in 2007. Then, after serving one year as the student manager for Hoosier baseball in 2008, Coffman was promoted to volunteer assistant coach in 2009.
Coffman spent his playing days as an outfielder at Lake Michigan College in Benton Harbor, Mich. In high school, he played four years at South Bend Clay and was named the 2003 Northern Indiana Player of the Year. He played in the 2004 North/South All-Star Game and the 2002 Senior League World Series.
