Windy sweep for West Georgia over GSW softball

AMERICUS, Ga.- The Georgia Southwestern softball team (3-7) lost their battle with both the wind and West Georgia (5-8) on Feb. 18 at Lady ‘Cane Field.

GAME 1: GSW 4, West Georgia 5

It was a scorless game up until the top of the third when West Georgia brought two in. Kilandra Dollar started it off making it to first after getting hit by a pitch and advanced to second after Sydney Howell hit a single up the middle. Randi Phillips hit a sacrifice bunt to advance Dollar and Howell and both scored after Jordan Corbin reached first on an error. The Wolves were able to bring in two more at the top of the fourth to take a 4-0 lead.

In the bottom of the fourth Keri Tompkins stepped up to bat and knocked one out of left field to hit her sixth home run of the season.

GSW’s outfielders kept the Wolves from scoring in the fifth and sixth catching anything that came to them.

At the top of the seventh West Georgia scored their fifth run after Molly Uhrma hit a double to center field sending Mackenzie Arlt in.

At the bottom of the seventh GSW was down by four and with two outs Rachel McElroy tried to save the day by hitting a single to right center, sending in Mary Beth Wilson and Haley Warner. With McElroy on first and Kiley Doster on third, Haley Goodson sent one to center field bringing Doster home. Lauren Thrasher was up next but got the third out with a line drive to center field. GSW ended the seventh with 3 runs, 4 hits, 1 error by West georgia and 2 left on base.

GSW finished the game with 9 hits, 4 runs, 4 RBIs and 1 error.

Haley Goodson (1-5) took the loss for the Lady ‘Canes after pitching 7 innings. She gave up 12 hits, 5 runs, walked 1 and struck out 2.

GAME 2: GSW 5, West Georgia 7

The Lady ‘Canes brought their fire from the end of the first game into the second. Erin Steele was first at bat and knocked one to left center and stopping on second and stope third while McElroy was up to bat. McElroy hit one out sending Steele home and reaching first on a fielders choice. Goodson hit a single and McElroy advanced to second. Thrasher hit a grounder to first on a sacrifice bunt sending Goodson to second and McElroy to third. With one out and bases loaded Tompkins stepped up and hit a single up the middle bringing McElroy home. GSW finished the first with with 3 hits, 2 runs and had 1 left on base.

West Georgia tied the game 2-2 at the top of the second and took the lead at the top of the third with another run.

The Lady ‘Canes took back control of the game sending three home at the bottom of the third. Goodson started it off with a double to left center and scored after Thrasher singled one out to center field and advanced to third off an error. Tompkins reached first off another error by the Wolves and advanced to second when Allee Denny was up to bat. Chelsea Littlejohn reached first off a bunt and sent Thrasher home. Wilson hit a sacrifice to short stop which sent Tompkins home. GSW finished the third with with 2 hits, 3 runs, 2 errors by West Georgia and had 1 left on base.

No one scored and runs in the next three innings but West Georgia pushed four across home plate with two outs to take the win.

GSW finished the game with 8 hits, 5 runs, 4 RBIs and 3 error.

Savannah Carlise (1-3) took the loss for GSW pitching 7 innings, gave up 13 hits, 7 runs, walked 3 and struck out 5.

The Lady ‘Canes are home Feb. 21 to host Emmanuelat 1 and 4 p.m. at Lady ‘Cane Field.
