AMERICUS — It’s time again: To celebrate those who have survived cancer and to remember those who did not.

The American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life event begins at 6 p.m. Friday, April 24 at the Americus-Sumter County High School South Campus.

Events kick off with the Survivors’ Walk in which individuals who have battled cancer and won take a lap around the track. This is a joyful event and supporters and family members and friends can cheer on the survivors from trackside.

One of the most touching features of the event is the Luminaria Ceremony in memory of and in honor of loved ones and friends who have had cancer. The lighting ceremony begins at approximately 9 a.m. and is always a moving event. Luminaries will be placed round the track “In Honor” and “In Memory” of all those touched by cancer. White luminary bags can be purchased for a $5 donation; a Glow Balloon for a single $25 donation or five balloons for $100 or a Tribute torch for an individual donation of $100. All donations are tax-deductible. As the balloons and torches are released, the person’s name is read aloud.

This year’s Relay for Life theme is “Sportin’ For a Cure” and all teams will have a sports theme such as baseball, boxing, football, etc.

Jessica Davis, Community manager, Relay For Life, South Atlantic Division, American Cancer Society Inc., told the Times-Recorder that 23 teams have signed up and will have individual tents/spaces during the event which usually goes until midnight. Each team will also have food, games and other activities.

Another highlight of the event is the Talent Show.

“It is going to be a lot of fun, said Davis. “There will surely be some laughs had and some good entertainment.”

Davis said musical entertainment will be provided by “the Jazz Band” as well as Transit. New to the Relay this year will be a Cake Walk and Zumba.

This year’s goal for the Sumter County Relay for Life is $56,500.
