Annual Confederate Memorial Day Service is April 25

AMERICUS — The Alexander H. Stephens Camp 78, Sons of Confederate Veterans, sponsors the annual Confederate Memorial Day Service in Americus at 5 p.m. April 25 in the Confederate plot of Oak Grove Cemetery. The public is invited. In case of inclement weather, the service will be held at the American Legion Hall on Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard, Americus.
Guest speaker for the Memorial Service is P. Charles Lunsford, historian, from Atlanta. The local Muckalee Guard Confederate reenactment group will also participate. The top two college scholarship winners from the local SCV Camp’s essay contest will read thei essays.
Confederate Memorial Day is a state holiday in Georgia. Since April 26 falls on Sunday, the state holiday will be observed Monday, April 27. Several years ago the Georgia Legislature passed a law declaring April of each year as Confederate History and Heritage Month in Georgia.
