AMERICUS — Furlow Charter School of Americus benefitted from the collaborative efforts of paint manufacturer PPG Industries; national not-for-profit “Independent We Stand”; Americus-based home improvement supply store Shiver Lumber Co. and local chapters of the Kiwanis and Rotary Clubs.
On Sept. 26, volunteers from Shiver Lumber and the local Kiwanis and Rotary Clubs painted newly-opened Furlow Charter School using paint provided by PPG through a grant program sponsored by Independent We Stand. Besides providing volunteers for the event, Shiver Lumber, Kiwanis and Rotary funded the cost of any supplies needed by the volunteers to complete the job.
Shiver Lumber is a member of Independent We Stand, an organization comprised of local independent businesses throughout the U.S. In July, the national non-profit (http://www.independentWestand.org) approved a grant jointly submitted by the Americus Rotary and Kiwanis Clubs for funding the cost of paint needed for the new Furlow Charter School. PPG Industries through its nationwide initiative Paint for a Change – established to help rehab community structures in need of paint restoration – was willing to donate the paint needed by the volunteer groups for paint projects at the local school. Paint For A Change was recently introduced by PPG on the heels of the announcement of their re-launch of the PPG Pittsburgh Paints brand, available exclusively to U.S.-based independent retailers. As part of the paint brand’s commitment to these locally-owned businesses, it has partnered with them to help them give back to their communities.
