DAWSON — Harold Cook Fletcher passed away Dec.  9, 2015, his home after a prolonged illness. He was 94 years old. Harold was the husband of the late Rachael Rainey Fletcher, the proud father of Joan Peddy Cowart and doting grandfather of Alan, Caren and Carol.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 12 at the Dawson Episcopal Church to be followed by a reception at the church.
Born on March 22, 1921, in Parrott, Georgia, he was a loving and devoted son and nephew, a wonderful brother, and a much cherished uncle to his nieces and nephews. Although he lived most of his adult life in Dawson, he was a steady presence in Parrott as he participated in any and all events there. Harold earned his degree in agricultural engineering from the University of Georgia and served in World War II.  He was a contractor, building houses early in his career and later concentrating on renovations. He continued to be an active carpenter into his early 90s. Harold was known for his gentle humor and his great stories of local characters and events accompanied by his ever present grin and laughter. He was a loyal friend, always ready to help others and generous to all. His spirit remained undaunted in the face of illness, cheerfully greeting everyone who visited him despite his pain. He will always be a shining example of integrity and grace to those who knew him well.
Celebrating with him in heaven today are his wife Rachael, his mother and father Susie and Carl Fletcher, and his sisters Emma, Marion, and Mary Sue. There are many friends and family who will deeply feel his absence. Prominent among them are his brother William Fletcher and wife Marilynn, his daughter Joan and husband Bob Cowart, his grandchildren Caren Jones, Carol Simica and Alan Cowart and his nieces and nephews, Gayle Alston, Steve and Jan Alston, Lee and Anne Bass, Georgeanne and Ken Honeycutt, Don and Mary McNeil, and Laurie and Gerry Wood.
