City of Americus reports sewage spill

AMERICUS — The City of Americus issued the following press release Tuesday afternoon.
“Due to a gravity sewer blockage, the manhole located at approximately 370 feet south of the Willets Brook located behind Georgia Southwestern State University, an unknown amount of sewage was spilled on and around Dec. 9, 2015. The City of Americus operates this collection system.
“City staff took immediate action to mitigate the spill. The City has established an upstream and downstream monitoring plan and will report findings to the Georgia Environmental Protection Department. The spill has been reported to the appropriate authorities as required.
“We are committed to working with local environmental authorities to take whatever steps are deemed appropriate to remedy this particular situation and to mitigate any short- or long-term impacts to the environment.
