Na’Charlesia Tiani Floyd, a senior who is currently among the top three scholars at Americus Sumter High School, was recently selected to attend the Dean Stuart Feldman Summer Science Institute at the University of Georgia College of Pharmacy. She was among 27 other students chosen from various states out of hundreds of applicants. After completion of the Summer Institute, Floyd was awarded a paid internship to continue research at the University of Georgia throughout her senior year.
The focus of the institute is pharmacy and science and includes lectures on pharmacy research, laboratory experiments in clinical skills, and discussions with science faculty. The week-long program was established in 2010 for high school students with a strong aptitude in math and science. Dean Stuart Feldman is a major supporter of the program, along with Walgreens, Student National Pharmaceutical Association and Mr. and Mrs. William Robie.
Activities included laboratory instruction, compounding, disaster preparedness and an overview of the doctor of pharmacy residency program. Field trips
to research laboratories in College of Pharmacy, the College of Biomedical Sciences and the Environmental Protection Agency; tours of campus and Sanford Stadium; and training in leadership skills and etiquette completed their schedule. Students resided in residence halls during the program.
Na’Charlesia Floyd is the daughter of Lonie Floyd and Ti’Erra Snead-Floyd of Americus., the granddaughter of  Willie Golphin and Elma Broner Snead-Golphin and the late Charles Snead and Viola Floyd. She has one sister, Julia Floyd.
