With the beginning of the NJCAA basketball season right around the corner, the South Georgia Technical College (SGTC) Jets and Lady Jets are busily preparing to kick off their competition,
That certainly doesn’t mean that the players are too busy to give back to the community.
When they’re not practicing free throws or running drills, members of the Jets and Lady Jets have been active throughout the area meeting and greeting old and new fans alike.
Most recently, the Jets and Lady Jets basketball players along with the college’s mascot, “ACE”, traveled to Schley County Elementary School recently to read to kindergarten, first, and second grade classes.
“This is our way of giving back to the community,” said SGTC Athletic Director and Lady Jets head basketball coach James Frey. “It is amazing to see the looks on the children’s faces when these tall basketball players walk in and volunteer to read a book to the students. The players and the students really enjoy the interaction and we appreciate the local school systems allowing us to do this,” added Frey.
The Jets and Lady Jets basketball teams have been visiting different elementary schools throughout the college’s six county service area during the months of September and October to read to different classrooms.
Giggles Frozen Yogurt in Americus also sponsored a “Meet and Greet” event for the SGTC basketball teams recently.

“We are thrilled to be able to host this event for the South Georgia Technical College Jets and Lady Jets basketball teams,” said Giggles owner, James E. Melvin. “This is a great opportunity to give our community the opportunity to come out and support South Georgia Technical College and their athletic program.”
Members of the 2016-17 Jets and Lady Jets basketball teams, coaches, Jets Booster Club members and college officials all participated in the event which featured a basketball shooting contest, live music, dancing, yogurt, and good fellowship. A portion of the proceeds from the event went to the Jets Booster Club.
The Jets and the Lady Jets kick off their regular season at home on Nov. 1 with a doubleheader. The Lady Jets face Chattahoochee Valley Community College at 6:00 p.m. and the Jets will play New Rock Prep at 8:00 p.m.
