One dead in assault; two in jail

AMERICUS — New Year’s Day brought violence to one neighborhood, resulting in the death a young Americus man.
According to the press release from the Americus Police Department, officers and EMS responded shortly before 5 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 1, to 80-A Dixon Drive in East Americus, to the report of an aggravated assault.
Two subjects were transported to Phoebe Sumter Medical Center from treatment of stab wounds incurred during the incident. At approximately 5:37 p.m., officers on the scene on Dixon Drive were notified that another victim from the incident had been located approximately one block away at the rear of the former Cherokee School on Cherokee Street.
Upon arrival on Cherokee Street, officers located David R. Grimes, 27, of Anthony Drive, Americus. Grimes was transported by EMS to Phoebe Sumter Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.
Detectives of the Americus Police Department, working with agents from the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, have charged Benard T. Hollis, 20, Centerville, and Shakema Waters, 17, of Rucker Street, Americus with felony murder and aggravated assault. Both suspects are currently being housed at the Sumter County Jail. The criminal investigation continues.
