AMERICUS — Louise Quillope was recently named the winner of the Trustees’ Scholarship at the recent Honors Day Program at Southland Academy. She is the daughter of Felix and Maria Quillope of Buena Vista. She is a senior for the 2016-2017 school year.
Applicants for the Southland Academy Trustees’ Scholarship must have attended Southland Academy for at least one year and must be currently enrolled in grades 9, 10, or 11. The scholarship is based primarily on a written essay, test scores, and academics with a minimum GPA being required. Extracurricular activities, goals, and community service are considered in the selection process, but are not the primary criterion. This scholarship is not based on the need of the family. A student is only eligible to win this scholarship one time.
Students enter by completing an application and by writing an essay in a supervised setting on a designated day. The Southland Academy Board of Trustees’ Scholarship Committee decides the winner of the scholarship. While this scholarship affords a student the opportunity to benefit from his/her achievements at Southland, it also has other effects that can encourage and motivate other students. The Trustees’ Scholarship promotes academics and writing; continues to emphasize to the students, teachers, and parents that academics and writing are important along with being respectful and responsible; gives a chance for a student from the existing student body to be awarded a scholarship other than need based; provides positive public relations in the community, and prepares students for the college application process.
