The name of the late Americus Police Officer Nicholas Smarr is shown on the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial in Washington, D.C. Smarr and best friend Jody Smith’s names were two of 135 added to the memorial this year as killed in the line of duty. Smith was a Georgia Southwestern State University Police office. They were killed Dec. 7, 2016, while answering a domestic call.
