Ellaville Methodist Church says thank you
Ellaville United Methodist Church thanks everyone for supporting its recent barbecue.
The church will have a 160th anniversary celebration in October. This will be a real big day for the Ellaville Methodist Church with a large crowd expecting to come from far and near.
A big dinner is planned after the service at the Thomas Edwin Wall Post 191 American Legion.
Schley commissioners, school board announce tax rate plans
Schley County property owners can expect their tax rates to remain basically unchanged, according to the proposed millage rates recently released by the two, major county governmental bodies.
The Schley County Board of Commissioners has proposed a millage rate of 12.264 which is up by 0.043 from the current rate of 12.307. The proposed new rate is expected to generate $1,338,464 in revenues which is a 0.25 percent increase over last year’s amount of $1,335,143.
The Commissioners are expected to officially adopt the new rate at the August meeting.
The Schley County Board of Education has proposed a millage rate of 16.62, which is down 0.059 from the current rate 16.679.
The proposed new rate is expected to generate $1,798,905 in revenue, 0.30 percent more than last year’s $1,793,511.
School board members are expecting to officially adopt the new rate in a meeting this month.
Smoke on the Square Barbecue Cook Off
Plans for the 2018 Smoke on the Square Barbecue Cook-Off are underway. This will be the third Cook-Off held in Ellaville and the date has been set for Saturday, Oct. 20.
Cooking teams will set up on Friday night and be ready to submit their entries by mid-morning on Saturday.
There will be vendors selling a variety of items. Barbecue sandwiches meals will be available at the Schley Community Foundation Booth. The Foundation is sponsoring the event and donations are tax exempt.
Chad’s Paint and Body is the premier sponsor of the event.
Other sponsorship levels are Boss Hog at $500, Smokers Alley at $250 and Barbecue Buddy at $100.
Applications for the cook teams, vendor booths and sponsorship are available at the Ellaville Floral Shop and on Facebook. You may also turn your applications into the Ellaville Floral Shop as well as checks or they can be mailed to Schley Community Foundation, P.O. Box 606, Ellaville GA 31806.
Serving on the Committee for the Smoke on the Square are Ryan Brown, Jarred Wall, Brian and Brooke Belcher, Brian Barnhill, Roger Bivins, Anthony Wall, and Rusty Harvey.
Historical society auction event nears
The Ellaville-Schley County Historical Society Auction is coming together well.
You may see three women who are members who have volunteered their time to help collect items to auction. You do not have to be a member to make a donation. All members are asked to donate. You don’t have to live in Ellaville/Schley County to be a member.
This special fundraising event will be held Saturday, Sept. 15 at the American Legion in Ellaville, starting at 4 p.m. with a Car Show. A special musical event will be held featuring Lonesome Road Bluegrass Christian Band from 5-7 p.m. A barbecue supper starts at 5 p.m. There are three raffles: Quilt Raffle, 50/50 Raffle, and a Ruger K 10-22 Semi-Automatic Rifle Raffle. Tickets are a $1 each except for the gun raffle which are $5 each or five for $20. Tickets are available for the Quilt and 50/50 at the Ellaville Floral Shop, Gill’s Drugs and The Pizza Place. Gun tickets are available at The Pizza place and Central Automatic.
