AMERICUS — Local authorities are still searching for two suspects involved in a shooting incident at a local business.
According to the Americus Police Department, shortly after 11 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 25, officers were dispatched to the 800 block of Mary Street to a report of shots fired. The responding officers located an injured man in the area who was transported to Phoebe Sumter Medical Center with head injuries.
According to a press release from Americus Police Chief Mark Scott, the investigation into the incident indicates that two black male subjects wearing masks came to the front door of the Dollar General at 805 Adderton St. in west Americus. The store had just closed and the front door was locked, but the store manager, a clerk, and one customer were inside the store at the front counter. At least one of the suspects was armed with a shotgun and began to hit the glass door with the weapon. The manager ran from the front counter toward the back of the store where he escaped through the back door. The clerk and customer also ran to the back of the store, but hid inside. One of the suspects fired a shot at the front door, shattering the glass. Both suspects ran around the store, chasing the fleeing store manager. At least two shots were fired from the shotgun outside of the store, but no pellets appear to have hit the fleeing victim.
The suspects caught up with the victim in the 800 block of Mary Street where a physical altercation occurred resulting in the store manager’s injuries. Both suspects fled the scene.
The suspects are described as two black males wearing masks and dark clothing. One of the suspects may have had a white T-shirt on under his outer clothing. Anyone with information is asked to call the Americus Police Department at 229-924-3677.
