James R. Salter: Sept. 29, 2018

AMERICUS — James Raford Salter, age 80, of Americus, died Saturday, Sept. 29, 2018. A native of Cordele, he was born Jan. 5, 1938, the son of the late Virgil Lee and Beulah Mae Salter. Mr. Salter was a member of First Baptist Church of Americus and was the manager of Rubos. Mr. Salter loved his grandchildren, fishing, baseball and spending time with his family. He was a great, strong, sincere, sensitive man who loved to make people feel warm and safe in his presence with his wit and humor.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 2, 2018, at Greg Hancock Funeral Chapel with Brother Bud Womack officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service from 10-11 a.m. at Greg Hancock Funeral Chapel. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens. Pallbearers include Rodney Carpenter, Carl Daniel, Al Erkhart Jr., Allen Erkhart, Milton Patrick and Eric Salter. Honorary pallbearers include Bo Patrick, Bobby Salter, Leon Salter, Lamar Salter, Glynn Smith, Frank Holland, Anthony Phillips, Flint Houston, and Grady Cammack.

Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Pamela and William Gay of Richmond Hill,  and Bonnie and Lee Tietjen of Americus; four sisters, Zelma Moore of El Paso, Texas, Carolyn Bass of Americus, Geraldine Reddish, all of Americus, and Dorothy Carpenter of Marianna, Fla.; three brothers and sister-in-law, Leon Salter of Americus, Bobby and Jean Salter of Americus and Lamar Salter of Americus; six grandchildren, Will and Kathryn Gay, Bradley and Nichole Gay, Jonathon Gay, Nazareth Jackson, Avid Toms and Brianna Toms; five great-grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, Paula Lansford Salter, and a sister, Billie Batts.
