• Firefighters responded to 47 calls for medical assistance.
• Firefighters responded to a report of a power line down on Ashby Street. A phone cable was lying over the roadway and Bell South was notified.
• Firefighters responded to Lorraine Avenue to a report of a possible structure fire. They found the occupant burning a large pile of brush in the back yard. They extinguished it and advised the woman of the city’s no-burn policy. They were called again later to the same address to a smoldering pile. They noticed a strong odor of lighter fluid in the brush pile that had not been evident previously. They soaked the pile with water.
• Firefighters responded to Lonnie Lane to a possible structure fire. An occupant told them she had witnessed sparks shooting from a light fixture in the dining room. There was no smoke or fire but they found a blown lightbulb and a tripped breaker in the panel box. They advised the occupant that it could be an electrical shortage in the wiring and to vacate the apartment and notify maintenance. Sumter County Fire & Rescue also responded.
• Firefighters responded to Cherokee Street to a possible structure fire. They found a pair of pants on fire in the woods. They extinguished the fire.
• Firefighters responded to a traffic accident on Hosanna Circle.
• Firefighters responded to an alarm on Millard Fuller Boulevard. No hazards were found.
• Firefighters responded to an alarm at Wells Fargo Bank, 212 W. Forsyth St. where they found a machine used for drying ink on t-shirts smoking. The machine had been turned off and fire personnel ventilated the area.
• Firefighters responded to an alarm on North Dudley Street. It was activated by food burned in a microwave oven.
• Firefighters responded to traffic accident on U.S. Highway 280 East.
• Firefighters responded to an alarm at Staley Middle School, 915 N. Lee St. It was determined that a small child had pulled the alarm accidentally.
• Firefighters responded to an alarm at U.S. Beauty Outlet, 1536 E. Forsyth St. No hazards were found.
• Firefighters responded to Mayo Street to a report of an egg odor in the structure. The occupant advised that she had heard a “weird” noise coming from the stove area. They heard it too. They shut off power at the breaker and the noise stopped. The occupant was advised to contact the landlord.
• Firefighters responded to Ga. Highway 27 East to possible wires down. The caller advised she had heard a loud boom outside and her lights flickered. They were advised by Americus Police on scene that a fuse had blown on a light pole.
• Firefighters responded to Aaron’s Rents, 705 E. Lamar St. to a report of an overheated air conditioning unit smoking. They found smoke inside the structure and went on the roof to check out the unit. They found that it was an overheated motor and shut off the power to the unit and advised the occupants to contact an electrician.
• Firefighters responded to a sounding alarm at The 1800 Mexican Restaurant, 329 W. Lamar St. There was no fire but a problem with the suppression system. The owner was advised to contact the alarm service provider.
• Firefighters responded to an alarm on Mayo Street. No hazards were found.
• Firefighters responded to a store at 1042 E. Forsyth St. to a gas spill. They used oil dry to absorb and isolate the 5-gallon spill.
• Firefighters responded to North Jackson Street to an alarm. It was activated by someone smoking inside.
• Firefighters responded to a structure fire on Walter Way. The fire had originated in the kitchen, with some extension into the attic. They extinguished the fire and ventilated the structure. The homeowner was advised not to stay in the residence or turn on the power. Georgia Power was notified.
• Firefighters responded to a traffic accident on West Forsyth Street.
• Firefighters responded to an alarm on Hickory Drive, that was activated when someone was changing the batteries in the alarm.
