AMERICUS – Georgia Southwestern State University senior forward Ella Hawkins scored two first-half goals to lead the Lady Hurricanes soccer team to a 3-1 victory over Albany State on Wednesday, October 24, at Hurricane Field.

The win was the Lady Hurricanes’ first home victory of the season.

Alison Rugel got GSW (3-13-0) on the board first with a shot from 18 yards out that went right over the ASU goalkeeper’s hands and into the net to give GSW a 1-0 lead in the 10th minute.

Alisa Barr was credited with the assist. In the 21st minute, Hawkins scored the first of her two goals on a penalty kick to increase the Lady Hurricanes’ lead to 2-0.

Three minutes later, Hawkins struck for her second goal of the match. Hawkins took a pass from Michelle Gustavsen and took a shot that went into the right corner of the net to increase GSW’s lead to 3-0.

Hawkins currently is the leading goal scorer for the Lady Hurricanes with six on the year.

In the 61st minute, Albany State (1-10-1) got on the board when LeFaren Donaldson passed the ball to Haley Kincheloe, who sent a shot into the far-right corner. However, that would be the only goal the Golden Rams would score.

Both teams took a total of 13 shots, but Georgia Southwestern State had a 9-7 edge in shots on goal.

The Lady Hurricanes will cap off their season when they host Lander University on Saturday, October 27, for Senior Night at Hurricane Field. They will be celebrating the careers of four seniors: Ella Hawkins, Rachel Cochran, Shelbie Mills and Avery Heid. Kickoff will begin at 5 p.m.
