ST. AUGUSTINE, FL – The Georgia Southwestern State University men’s soccer team traveled to St. Augustine, FL on Wednesday, October 24, hoping to earn their first Peach Belt Conference win of the season. Unfortunately, it wasn’t to be as the Hurricanes surrendered a pair of two first-half goals en route to a 3-0 loss to Flagler College.
GSW suffered its third consecutive loss. They fall to 3-9-2 overall and 0-5-1 in the PBC. Flagler bounced back from a 4-0 loss to the No. 2 ranked NCAA D-II team in the country: Young Harris College. That game was played on Saturday, October 20. Flagler improves to 5-8-1 overall and 3-2-1 in the PBC.
GSW is now 0-11 in their meetings with the Saints.
Flagler got on the board in the 17th minute when Samba Diop scored. This was followed by an additional goal off a successful penalty kick by Tryggvi Magnusson with 47 seconds before the break. The Hurricanes have surrendered a program-high eight penalty kick attempts this season. Fortunately, the GSW goalkeepers, Francesco Bazzano and Matthew Sherry, have saved half of those penalty kicks.
The final blow came when Oscar Davidsson scored on a shot just outside the box in the 53rd minute to seal the win for the Saints.
Hope arose slightly for the Hurricanes when the Saints were whistled for a foul inside their 18-yard box and GSW was awarded a penalty kick. However, Jonathan Sayers was unable to convert the penalty.
Flagler finished with a 14-10 edge on shots and a 7-6 edge in corner kicks. GSW goalkeeper Francesco Bazzano successfully stopped six shots.
The Hurricanes return home for their season finale on Senior Night Saturday, October 27, against North Georgia. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
