Georgia Southwestern State baseball program signs seven new student-athletes

AMERICUS – The GSW baseball program signed seven new players during college baseball’s National Signing Day last week. The Hurricanes signed four incoming freshmen and three junior college transfers.

Incoming freshmen

 Christian Griffin is an outfielder from Buford High School in Buford, GA. Griffin was named to the Perfect Game High School Honorable Mention List and has also won the Ryan Daniel Leadership Award and Citizenship Award. Griffin was named to the Honor Roll multiple times throughout his three years in high school. He recently played for the East Cobb Colt 45’s 17u team.

Samuel Marques is a shortstop from Marietta, GA. Marques attends Lassiter High School, where he has earned accolades such as the 2017 Lassiter Junior Varsity MVP, the 2017 Lassiter Junior Varsity Gold Glove Award, and was a 2018 Second-Team All-Region Selection. Marques was also a 2018 All-State Honorable Mention, and was named to the 2018 Cobb County High School All-Star Team. Marques is also a member of the National Honor Society and has been a Scholar Athlete. He has been named to the Honor Roll for three years during his high school career. Marques recently played for the East Cobb Prime-Zileox 17u Team.

Riley Powers is a right-handed pitcher from Vidalia, GA. Powers attends Vidalia High School, where he was named to the All-Region Team as a pitcher. His brother, Drew Powers, previously pitched at Georgia Southwestern State from 2015-2017.

Joseph Roden is a right-handed pitcher from Locust Grove, GA. Roden attends Locust Grove High School, where he has earned All-Region and All-State honors. He recently played for the Rawlings Southeast 17u National Team.

 

Junior College Transfers

Tanner Jones is a right-handed pitcher who is transferring in from South Georgia State College.

Cody Ogilvie is a right-handed pitcher from Hazlehurst, GA who is also transferring in from South Georgia State College. As a freshman, he appeared in 13 games with a record of 3-1 in 32.2 innings pitched. Ogilvie attended Jeff Davis High School and earned 2016 and 2017 First Team All-Region and All-State honors. Ogilvie was also named the Most Valuable Player and Pitcher of The Year. In addition to those awards, Ogilvie was also named the 2017 All-State Player of the Year. Ogilvie got it done in the classroom as well. He was named to the Honor Roll during all four years of his high school career and was a member of the BETA Club.

Alejandro Vasquez is an infielder from Miami, FL. Vasquez is transferring in from Mercer County Junior College. As a freshman, Vasquez appeared in 44 games and posted a .308 batting average. He drove in 30 runs, 23 RBIs, had four stolen bases and hit one home run.
