ALBANY— Attention all area Vietnam veterans. It’s about time you were welcomed home the right way at a special event sponsored by VFW of Georgia.
A group of citizens in Albany and Tifton has organized an event for Vietnam veterans in South Georgia. The event will be from noon-7 p.m. March 9 in Chehaw Park with Capt. (ret.) Tommy Clack as keynote speaker. The opening ceremony is at 12:15 p.m. with the National Anthem and Color Guard.
The event is a “homecoming,” according to organizers, to welcome home these veterans of Vietnam in the manner they should have been but were not. These veterans are now in the late 6j0s and 70s, and the group seeks to assure them they are not forgotten, and to honor and respect them for their years of service.
Admission to the event is free, and raffle tickets will be on sale for food, dessert, and gifts (free for Vietnam vets). There will also be arts & crafts vendors (vendor fees waived for Vietnam veterans or spouses).
Other highlights are a Huey helicopter, live performances from local musicians with songs of the 1960s and ‘70s.
A parade/procession begins at 2 p.m. when spectators will have the opportunity to cheer the veterans and show their appreciation for their service to country.
