AMERICUS – Healthy Sumter distributed 150 fresh produce boxes to students and staff at Fresh Start Academy this past Friday, and then distributed 350 Fresh Produce boxes this past Saturday at a Community Food Giveaway held at Allen Chapel AME Church in Americus.

Each box contained Sweet Potatoes, Apples, Vidalia Onions, Squash and Cabbage.

These were the final distribution events for 2023. In all, more than 3,200 food boxes were distributed this year, impacting more than 12,000 people in our community.

Special thanks to Farmer Fredo of Flint River Fresh for his assistance on both of these projects and throughout the year. Kudos to Fresh Start Academy’s Travis Lockhart & Eric Brown for helping get the items their students and staff.  Thanks also to Pastor Jermaine Harris, Janice Harris, Eric Finch and the Allen Chapel AME volunteer team for hosting the community event. Last but certainly not least, a special kudos to Sumter County Boys basketball coach Johnny Genwright and his young men who came out on a game day to distribute boxes this past Saturday at Allen Chapel AME.
