AMERICUS – The Sumter County Varsity Boys Soccer Team trailed Worth County 2-1 in the second half, but thanks to two goals from Juan Aguirre and a goal from Kevaughn Hart, the Panthers were able to score a 4-3 come-from-behind victory over the Rams on Friday at Alton Shell Stadium.
“We were down a couple of players and you could tell a little bit. I thought the other team did a really good job. They hustled,” SCHS Head Coach Michael Pepito said. “You could tell they (Worth County) were really trying. They’ve improved so I give them credit. We were trying some things and putting people in new positions. You could see we weren’t as strong as we normally are. I would take the win. It’s a good one for us. We’ve got Jeff Davis next. That’s going to be a tough game.”
Late in the first half, the Panthers got on the scoreboard first when Luis Diaz drilled a shot over the WC goalkeeper’s head and into the net.
However, in the waning minutes of the first half, the Rams tied the game at 1-1 when Cameron Holland scored. Both teams would go into halftime with the score tied at 1-1.
The Rams would take a 2-1 lead in the 53rd minute when Cam Brown got a goal, but the Panthers rallied to tie the match at 2-2 on a goal by Juan Aguirre with 22 minutes remaining. Then about three minutes later, Aguirre would earn his second goal of the match, giving the Panthers a 3-2 lead.
Not long thereafter, the Panthers would get an insurance goal from Kevaughn Hart with about 19 minutes left. The Rams were able to get to within one at 4-3 on a goal from Kasen Mullen, but the Panthers were able to hold on for the 4-3 victory.
With the win, the Panthers are 4-2-1 overall and they are in fourth place in the Region 2A Area 1 standings. They will travel to Hazelhurst, GA on Tuesday to take on the Jeff Davis Yellowjackets (4-3-1). Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
