AMERICUS — Americus Police Lt. Helen Sims says the police department has about 60 bicycles in its possession, so many that she needs to clear out the inventory before more come in.
Sims said the bicycles are turned in from individuals who have found them or turned in by officers who’ve found them around the city. Some of the bicycles might have been stolen, Sims said, but she has no way of knowing, being that not everyone who has a bike stolen will report it to police.
“Also, some folks don’t record their serial number so they just don’t bother to report the theft,” Sims said.
The collection of bicycles that Sims oversees range from children’s models to adults, including a few really nice mountain bikes.
Sims is ready to get rid of these bicycles and asks that if anyone has had a bike stolen recently to please call her at 229-924-3677 or 229-815-4126. If they can adequately describe their bicycle, she will gladly relinquish it to them.
