Schley 4-H’ers compete in District Project Achievement
Four students represented Schley County at the Southwest District for Junior and Senior 4-H District Project Achievement held Feb. 8-10 at the Rock Eagle 4-H Center. Approximately 450 seventh- through 12th-grade 4-H’ers from 44 counties attended the annual project competition meeting.
The Junior 4-H’ers from Schley County Middle School in the seventh grade were Sara Beth Murray, placing First in her Human Development Project discussing on the effects of cell Phone usage for teens. Another seventh grader, Laney Martin, placed second in Performing Arts General Project when she sang and played her ukulele.
The Senior 4-H’ers (grades 9-12) representing Schley County High School were Anna Trussell, in Arts and Crafts Projects, who placed third for her painting. Lily Harbuck competed in History, and placed fourth on the History of Ballet.
To compete at the District level each 4-H’er must complete a 4-H portfolio of their activities during the previous year, that are submitted prior to the event for judging. At the actual competition, they present and illustrate demonstration on one subject in their project area. The portfolio and demonstration scores are combined to determine the winners.
All 4-H’ers, in addition to their individual project demonstrations, participated in a group discussing recreational activities and special assembly programs. Campaigning for elections for juniors and seniors District boards members are held during the weekend.
Other highlights of the weekend include the annual District Slide Show and the famous 4-H Dance that was held Saturday night after the announcement of the junior winners.
The weekend concluded with an assembly in which Junior District Board and Senior Board members were installed and the announcement of the winner for the seniors were announced.
Attended this special event was Schley County Extension Secretary and 4-H Program leader Brenda Welch. These students have put a lot of work in and a lot of fun to have accomplished so much. Ellaville/Schley Historical Society board meets
On Feb, 12, the Ellaville-Schley County Historical Society board met in the courthouse conference room.
President Nancy McMath Young called the meeting to order, and Wilbur Justice opened with prayer.
A representative of a book publisher gave information on publishing a new history book. This book will update since the last book published 38 years ago, and history that was left out of the first book.
We are in need of more history, family lineage, businesses, etc. Please make a donation for this book. You don’t have to be a member or live here to make a donation. We’ve found history that no one knew about. We’ll be setting up a time and date soon and you’ll have more information on this special project.
The board went into its business session with the secretary’s and treasurer’s reports.
There will be a membership party held on April 6, for all members as well as people who are thinking about becoming members. Come and share some history that night. If you are interested in joining the historical society please contact me or to serve on a special committee, please plan to sign up at the party.

Ellaville’s roundabout starts construction in March
The Ellaville City Council received the big news from Ellaville’s City Manager Lynne McChargue that the Georgia Department of Transportation had notified her about the construction of a roundabout at the intersection of Ga, Highway 26 East and U.S. Highway 19.
This project had been put off for a year, but construction will begin in March. The project had to be re-engineered and will be much wider than the first planned.
In other city news, Ellaville will be getting a new well.

Free GED classes offered in Ellaville
South Georgia Technical College Adult Education classes are open to the public. The public has the special opportunity to take the GED classes next door to Ellaville City Hall.
These classes are held on a regular basis. The classes are from 8 a.m.-noon and 1-4 p.m. Monday through Friday. Classes are also held from 6-8 p.m. on Tuesday and Wednesday.
