AMERICUS — What would you do if you learned that your unborn child would be missing a bone and would not have the use of one foot? The Davis family of Americus faced the intimidating news that their son Caleb, now two years old, would face that difficulty. They decided to turn the challenge into opportunity. In addition to teaching their young son that a “disability” does not disable him, they are also using his challenges as a way to help others.

Caleb’s Cause is a 5K and 1-mile fun run named in honor of Caleb. He had to have one foot amputated at 10 months of age, but was fitted with a prosthetic lower leg and has learned to do all the things an active little boy his age does. Caleb’s Cause was born to celebrate the happy, energetic life Caleb is living and to assist and inspire others.

The event will be held at 8 a.m. May 2 on the campus of Georgia Southwestern State University to benefit the Scott Rigsby Foundation.

Caleb’s parents, Josh and Samantha Davis, are active runners and triathletes. In that context, they met Scott Rigsby. Rigsby, who lost both of his lower legs as the result of an auto accident as a teenager, was the first double-amputee to ever compete the Hawaii Ironman (a 2.4-mile swim, 112-mile bike ride, and a 26.2-mile run, all of which he did on prosthetic legs).

Through triathlons and a mutual prosthesis provider, Rigsby and the Davises became friends, and they are now joining forces to raise funds for Rigsby’s foundation to inspire, in form and enable individuals with disabilities to live a healthy, active lifestyle.

Caleb’s Cause is open to runners and walkers of all abilities. Participants may enter the 5K race or the one-mile Fun Run. In addition, Scott Rigsby will be available to sign his book Unthinkable from 5-7 p.m. May 1 at Clinic Drug Store.

Rigsby will also share a motivational presentation at 3 p.m. May 3 at Williams Road Church and on May 4 at Southland Academy. The presentation at Williams Road Church is open to the public and a reception will follow in the church’s fellowship hall to provide attendees an opportunity to meet both Rigsby and Caleb.

Local businesses may also help with the event by sponsoring as many already have.
